Sustainability of Renewable Energy Systems with Special Reference to Ocean Thermal Energy Conversion Schemes

It was required to determine relative merits of commonly used renewable energy (RE) systems for which estimation their individual sustainability percent achievable chosen as the single criterion assessment tool. The methodology developed estimating included identification indices (SI) and examining scope input /kWh power generation each SI summing them up total accrued from respective RE systems. studied photo-voltaic (PV) cells, bio-fuels, on-shore & off-shore wind OTEC schemes. Coal plant being commercially viable referral scheme. Nine identified study resource potential, greenhouse gas saving, influence on flora fauna, effects human health, land loss aspects, food potable water security, economy evaluation, improvement in quality life economic growth. Total showed highest OTEC, followed by wind, bio-fuels PV, respectively. index schemes like competing equally with coal having poor least cost; whence Hybrid high production cost. Four fold approaches have been suggested reducing cost OTEC. (i) Adopting economically scheme not less than 40 MW. (ii) Heating working fluid solar irradiation, terming SOTEC (iii) Saving cable laying cost, hydrogen utilizing generated. (iv) Hybridization
